About us:

After Cristi lost her vision and it was determined she would not regain it, Cristi and Bruce began searching for a Portuguese Water Dog. On July 18, 2002, Cristi and Bruce brought a small, black wavy bundle of energy home. After a couple of different trials, his call name became Jack. He had two speeds: dead run and dead asleep. This was the beginning of a wonderful journey into PWDs.

On May 23, 2005, Cristi and Bruce drove back to Tesouro Kennels in Bowling Green, OH and got a dog for Jack for his third birthday. After all, every little boy needs a dog. She renamed herself Jill and she was a 2 ½ year old black, wavy coat, and was our foundation bitch.

On April 8, 2007, we (mostly Jill) whelped our first litter of 7 PWDs. Slammin’ Sammie (aka Doodlebug) is the puppy we kept from this litter. Indy, her littermate lives nearby with Cindi and “the Village” has expanded from there. Many of our dogs participate in various activities including: water work, agility, obedience, rally, tracking, therapy and service work (there IS a different between a Therapy Dog and a Service Dog). Several have also earned AKC Conformation Championships, and others are still working towards that goal.

Cristi, Bruce, and the dogs live up a “holler” in Barboursville, WV. We enjoy playing in the yard, hiking through the woods, and playing in the pond, well the dogs enjoy the pond, Cristi prefers the pool.

Cristi and Bruce are members of the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America (PWDCA). If you are seriously interested in bringing a PWD into your home, the PWDCA is a great resource for even more information about this breed. The club’s magazine, The Courier, is an award winning breed publication with invaluable information about the breed’s health and training, available only to PWDCA members. Cristi is also a member of Movers & Shakers PWD Club of the Carolinas, Kanawha Obedience Training Club and Magic Valley Kennel Club. We believe strongly in health testing, especially the tests recommended for the breed by the parent club. You can see the results of each dogs' tests on their respective page.

About the Breed:

Portuguese Water Dogs are a spirited, intelligent breed. They are truly a working breed, which means PWDs are not for everyone. Please research the breed thoroughly, visit the PWDCA website, and meet actual PWDs in their home settings before adding one to your family. Although a properly coated (as opposed to an improper coat, sometimes called smooth faced or IC) PWD does not shed its coat seasonally, fairly significant grooming is required. Most PWDs need full grooming every 4 to 6 weeks, but you will need to brush the dog (to the skin) at least twice a week between groomings.

This breed is often referred to as being non-allergenic, but hypoallergenic is a better term, which means less likely to cause an allergic reaction as opposed to no reaction. If you or someone in your home has allergies, please consult with your doctor before adding a PWD to your family. While you may not be allergic to the coat, you may be allergic to the debris the coat will carry if not kept clean. It is possible to keep a PWD coat scrupulously clean, which may reduce allergens. Occasionally, people will be allergic to the saliva of the dog. If that is the case we do not know of any way to avoid that allergy. It might also be a good idea to visit someone with PWDs with the coat type you are thinking of getting, and/or someone with multiple PWDs to see how you react if your doctor approves.
