Bio:

Jack’s registered name is CH Tesouro’s BlackJack at Yr Svc CD RN NAJ CWD SROM CGC SD-Guide and generally the BDIWWW (best dog in the whole wide world).  Of course, that last title was bestowed by Cristi, but he earns it daily. The SD-Guide refers to his real job as Cristi’s Service Dog - Guide.
Jack is our first PWD.  Born May 23, 2002, he came to live with us in July of that year.  We planned to train him to hang out with me and pick up things Cristi dropped – just generally be an all around helper.  Jack is a natural retriever and loves to learn new things – he is also very high energy.  When Jack was still a puppy, Cristi discovered that Service Dogs did not have to be trained by organizations – they could be privately trained or even owner trained.

With Jack’s temperament and intelligence, we decided to try to train him to be Cristi’s Service Dog Guide. In October of 2002, he spent time with a service dog trainer learning the basics of being an obedient dog especially in public.  Then he and Cristi started practicing with her white cane.  Jack was a natural. When not officially on the job (in harness), Jack is a typical PWD.  Well, to be honest, he is probably a little more boisterous than most. At times, visiting family members have requested that Cristi put Jack in harness so he’ll stop trying to retrieve things for them. When ‘dressed’, there’s never been a more professional dog.

When Jack was 2 years old and the “in training” patches came off, we discovered water work.  We had a slow start to dog sports because Cristi lacks vision and Jack knows it. It took a while to find a way to let him know that Cristi would be ok with the guide person. Even after that, sometimes he would decide that he needed to work for Cristi instead of competing with another handler.  But that’s fine with Cristi as she has always preferred that his real job interfere with the games, rather than have the games interfere with his real job.  Cristi did not really worry about that happening with Jack though.

With the help of our friend Cindi, who functions as the sighted guide person during training and competition, Jack has earned a companion dog obedience title (CD); a rally novice title (RN); a novice level agility jumpers title (NAJ); Junior Water Dog certificate (JWD); Apprentice Water Dog (AWD); Working Water Dog (WWD) and Courier Water Dog (CWD) titles   He is a conformation champion and is working on tracking, and his Courier Excellent water title.  Jack loves to learn and work so it’s a challenge to keep him occupied.  In addition to dog sports, he was always learning new ways to help out at home.  He cleaned up the toys and put them away in the box; gathers the bowls for dinner (the dogs’ dinner only); and helps with laundry.  
In the last year, Jack (14 years old at time of writing) has lost much of his hearing and he has slowed somewhat.  He’s still pretty lively a few hours each day (and his activity level during that time often belies his age).

On an extremely limited basis, frozen semen is available from Jack to approved bitches
